The Ghana Witch Camps

Date: Sunday, April 19, 2020

Time: 2 pm - 4 pm

Location: Four of Wands, 440 N College Ave, Fayetteville, AR 72701

Join Gael Figueroa, the Academic Witch, in investigating the Ghana witch camps. In 2020, a woman suspected of practicing witchcraft may be banished to the witch villages. In South Africa, the transition from a communal to capitalist lifestyle echoes the transition from feudalism to capitalism in the Middle Ages. This economic class struggle coincides with the increase in witchcraft-related violence. How have the state and NGOs helped or harmed the situation? We will discuss the factors contributing to these human rights violations, the secluded and impoverished lives of the accused, as well as the social and legal mechanisms put in place to end the atrocities. Seating is limited, reserve a spot now.

Join Gael Figueroa, the Academic Witch, for an introduction to the history of the witch. How did social heresy contribute to the witch-hunting craze? Rebellious women, healers, the poor or disabled, and the elderly constituted marginalized populations that challenged the order of society during the instability of the Reformation. We will review case studies of both groups and individual women accused of rebelling against God and country, and the men in power who worked to control or, when all else failed, eradicate them. The implications of the social, economic, and legal factors that fueled the fire of the Burning Times are frightening
