Join Gael Figueroa, the Academic Witch, in investigating the Ghana witch camps. In 2020, a woman suspected of practicing witchcraft may be banished to the witch villages. In South Africa, the transition from a communal to capitalist lifestyle echoes the transition from feudalism to capitalism in the Middle Ages. This economic class struggle coincides with the increase in witchcraft-related violence. How have the state and NGOs helped or harmed the situation? We will discuss the factors contributing to these human rights violations, the secluded and impoverished lives of the accused, as well as the social and legal mechanisms put in place to end the atrocities.
